Build Your Family Bank

The First Meeting

Emily Griffiths-Hamilton approached me with a challenge: “I want to find a way to share a lifetime of unique experience, expertise and research, so I can help families around the world more successfully transition wealth from generation to generation.” Emily knew of my global experience in PR & Marketing, as well as Finance and Communications and most of all she knew we would work well together.

About the Client

Emily Griffiths-Hamilton is a Chartered Accountant and Investment Advisor who brings three generations of experience to the subject of succession and wealth transition planning. Her maternal grandfather, veterinarian Dr. Ballard, was one of North America’s greatest dynamic wealth creators (Dr. Ballard Dog Food) Her father, Frank A Griffiths, built a highly successful sports and media empire. Emily is a focused and disciplined researcher and an academic by nature, with a genuine interest in reaching out and helping others in the area of Succession Planning.

The Challenge

How to get the word out that Emily is available and more than prepared to help families successfully transition wealth from generation to generation. Her passion to work with families providing them with the tools and vocabulary that can help them avoid falling victims to the age-old proverb; “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in 3 generations”, (meaning wealth gained in one generation will be lost by the third), was evident. How do we take the articles she had written and researched, as well as her personal experience, and get it all into the hands of the people who need it?

The Solution

Seemed simple, simple as the consultant and the coach; “take all your articles and now write a book and we will have it published”, certainly not simple for the client who after writing all these impressively researched articles is told; “now just write a book”. Fortunately Emily is fearless and tireless in her work.

Some months later with a first draft of her book in hand, we easily secured an excellent publisher who was impressed with her work, agreed it deserved and needed to be published but also suggested it should be “re-written”!

I supported and coached when needed, debated ideas, worked on creating models and regularly challenged theories, Emily did the work and impressed us all with her discipline and structure, but also her willingness to listen and take advice.

The Result

A well-written, beautifully designed and professionally published book, it was finally time to share the word and get the message out.
I quickly reached out to my friend and supporter, Jim Treliving and shared Emily’s book with him and his wonderful and very wise wife Sandi. After they read it I asked them if they would host the launch of the book in Toronto. They agreed without hesitation. The launch party was attended by bankers, accountants, celebrities and other authors, including no other than David Chilton author of Canada’s best selling; Wealthy Barber, and fellow Dragon to Jim on CBC’s Dragon Den.

The reviews for Build Your Family Bank were impressive and far-reaching.
One of the more exciting opportunities came when a publication from London, Campden Wealth Magazine, reached out to review Build Your Family Bank.
I saw a special opportunity and had a PR company I worked with in London do some research for us. After a few calls and sharing Emily’s book with Campden Wealth, they were so impressed with her work that Emily was booked to speak in London, Rome and Hong Kong, at Campden Wealth Conferences. Together, Emily and I worked out the details for her presentations, rehearsed, and prepared her for her speaking engagements.
While in London my PR colleague arranged Emily a number of interviews, one of which resulted in a full story, front page of Finance Section, London’s Sunday Times.

Emily’s continues to share her research, expertise and experience still today through her public speaking, her work with clients and of course through her book; Build Your Family Bank, which has sold out and is now in its second print run.

Donald Mackenzie is an extraordinary business builder who realized that no matter how financially successful one might be, retirement is boring, and turned his laser-sharp advice and insights towards the work I do. Donald and I have shared endless hours of academic and practical business and wealth transition conversations, and he was a willing and much needed sounding board while I wrote this book
